Psychological assessment

Dr. Leslie Hemedes provides psychoeducational assessments for children, teens, and adults who are experiencing difficulties in the academic or standardized testing settings. The assessment process helps provide an in depth look at unique abilities, learning styles, & impediments to optimal functioning, which offers insight onto needed supports that would allow for optimal functioning.

What are psychoeducational assessments?

The goal of psychological assessments is to help establish or clarify a mental health diagnosis through the use of a comprehensive clinical interview and personality/emotional tests. Psychoeducational assessments take an individualized approach to identifying potential learning disabilities, emotional, & behavioral challenges that may be impeding a child/adult from being successful in the academic setting. These assessments provide important information around functioning (e.g., diagnoses, strengths, areas in need of support), and helps identify what may be getting in the way of reaching one’s full potential. Psychoeducational assessments can be a tremendous resource in providing a detailed roadmap that informs areas in need of support, treatment, and educational planning.

Does your child need a psychoeducational assessment?

  • If your child consistently studies hard but the marks do not reflect your child’s effort
  • If your child has the intellectual capacity but, due to challenges around procrastination, organization, and planning, has trouble consistently turning in homework assignments on time
  • If teachers note that your child has trouble staying focused and attentive in class
  • If your child presents with any behavioral or emotional problems that impacts day-to-day functioning and relationships with others in the home or school setting
  • If you feel that your child is gifted, and needs enhanced/accelerated learning opportunities
  • If your child consistently doesn’t want or doesn’t like to go to school
  • If your child’s marks are good in all areas except one or two, such as Math, English, Or Written Expression
  • If you think your child would benefit from school accommodations

Do I need a psychological assessment?

  • Do you constantly feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and obligations?
  • Is it a challenge to keep yourself organized at work/home?
  • Do you consistently receive feedback from employers that it’s difficult for you to adhere to work expectations?
  • Do you consistently turn in projects or assignments past the deadline?
  • Are you having trouble being consistent in your relationships, and feel that you constantly let people down?
  • Do you find yourself studying for your standardized test, and feel that your score does not reflect your efforts?

What does the psychological assessment process look like?

  • Initial Consultation: During an initial screening interview, I will meet with the child/parents, or adult to discuss the concerns that are prompting the need for testing. I will share what the assessment process looks like, and answer any questions that you have.
  • Assessment of Social-Emotional and Behavioral Functioning: This part of the assessment involves gathering collateral and qualitative information that would allow me to better understand the child/adult. Clinical interviews with parents are conducted to gather information that could be helpful in creating more context to the presenting concerns. In addition to the latter, questionnaires are given to parents, teachers, and the child/adult.
  • Psychometric Testing: The child/adult will be given various tests to assess academic and reasoning skills, intellectual abilities, memory, attention, and executive functions. Typically, testing is conducted over 2 sessions. The testing duration will be adjusted to the individual needs of the child/adult. Each session will range from 2 to 4 hours each session.
  • Report and Recommendations: I will develop a comprehensive report that will include information gained from the interviews, scored tests, clinical observations throughout testing, and questionnaires. The report will additionally include detailed recommendations for treatment, support, necessary school accommodations, and at-home support strategies.
  • Feedback Session: I will meet with the parents (and student when appropriate)/adult to extensively go over the findings of the assessment. We will discuss recommendations to obtain appropriate supportive services, school accommodations, and specific interventions that meet your child’s/your needs.
